Most of us at we love panda had the opportunity to visit the Chengdu base to see pandas up close. But it's not always easy to get to China, that's why we decided to make a list of zoos that have pandas in the world for you.

Zoo With Pandas Americans

1) Zoo with pandas USA

a) Atlanta Zoo

More than 1,500 animals, Atlanta Zoo has been a landmark attraction in the Georgian capital for a very long time. Located in Grant Park, the Atlanta Zoo is best known for its pair of giant pandas. Lun Lun and Yang Yang, who despite their captivity have already given birth 6 times. They gave birth to two cubs on September 3, 2016, and are still present in the zoo.

  • Lun Lun (female): arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1999. Born on August 25, 1997, at the Chengdu research base on the breeding of the giant panda.
  • Yang Yang (male): arrived at the zoo on 5 November 1999. Born on 9 September 1997 at the Chengdu research base on giant panda breeding.
  • Ya Lun (female): born at the zoo on 3 September 2016.
  • Xi Lun (female): born at the zoo on 3 September 2016

b) Washington Zoo

The National Zoological Park is located in Washington DC. The zoo was the third country, after Russia and North Korea, to receive pandas as diplomatic gifts. Indeed, a pair of pandas were given to President Nixon during the Cold War following his visit to China. Today this zoo is home to two pandas:

  • Tian Tian (male): arrived at the zoo on December 6th, 2000. Born on 27 August 1997 in the center of Wolong.
  • Mei Xiang (female): arrived at the zoo on 6 December 2000. Born on 22 July 1998 in the center of Wolong.

They are leased by the China Giant Panda Research and Conservation Center as part of a captive breeding program. The initial contract was extended for an extra 5 years in early 2011 and again for another 5 years in 2015. So, this is the last year for these two pandas at the Washington Zoo. This two pandas will return to their ancestral home at the end of the year.

c) Memphis Zoo

This zoo is home to over 3,500 animals representing more than 500 different species. It also houses two pandas!

  • Ya Ya (female): arrived at the zoo on April 7, 2003 (read the article). Born on August 3, 2000, at the Beijing Zoo.
  • Le (male): arrived at the zoo on April 7, 2003 (read the article). Born on 18 July 1998 at Chongqing Zoo.

These two pandas are rented at Memphis Zoo for 10 years as part of a captive breeding program. The contract was extended for 10 years in 2013.

2) Zoo with Panda Canada

The two pandas present in Canada needed food during the COVID-19 crisis. The zoo therefore sent its two protégés back to China because of the pandemic, which prevented the supply of bamboo to feed them.

The two pandas, the female Er Shun and the male Da Mao, arrived in Canada in 2013, welcomed at the time by Prime Minister Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen. They were on loan from China for 10 years, a gesture meant to symbolize the good relations between Ottawa and Beijing. The two animals spent several years at the Toronto Zoo, where Er Shun gave birth to twins in 2015, a first in Canada. The pandas and their offspring then moved to Calgary in 2018.

3) Zoo with Pandas Mexico

Today only the Mexico City Zoo, Chapultepec, has pandas. The Chapultepec Zoo is located in the Chapultepec Woods in Mexico City. The Chapultepec Zoo has approximately 1900 animals and welcomes more than 5 million visitors annually.

  • Shuan Shuan (female): Born at the zoo on June 15, 1987.
  • Xin Xin (female): born at the zoo on July 1, 1990.

These pandas born at the Mexico City Zoo belonged to Mexico. The parents of these pandas were diplomatic gifts, not loans.

II- ZOO WITH PANDA EUROPE

1) Zoo with Pandas Spain

The Zoo Aquarium of Madrid is the second oldest zoo in the world. The Madrid Zoo is about 20 hectares in size and includes a zoo, aquarium, dolphinarium and aviary. This zoo now houses to two adults pandas and a baby panda.

  • Bing Xing (male): arrived at the zoo on 8 September 2007. Born on September 1, 2000, at the Chengdu research base on the breeding of the giant panda.
  • Hua Zui Ba (female): arrived at the zoo on 8 September 2007. Born on 16 September 2003 at the Chengdu Research Base on Giant Panda Breeding.
  • Chulina (female): born at the zoo on 31 August 2016.

The couple of adult pandas is rented by the Chengdu base for a period of 10 years as part of a captive breeding program. In 2018, the contract was renewed for a further 5 years and runs until 2023.

2) Zoo with Pandas Austria

Three births took place in Schönbrunn Zoo in 2007, 2010 and 2013 as a result of natural mating, a first in Europe. Schönbrunn Zoo currently has 2 adult pandas and no baby pandas at the moment.

  • Yang Yang (female): arrived at the zoo on 14 March 2003. Born on 10 August 2000 in the center of Wolong.
  • Yuan Yuan (male): arrived at the zoo on 16 April 2019. Born on 23 August 1999 at Beijing Zoo.

3) Zoo with Panda UK

Today there are two adult pandas in the United Kingdom, in Scotland. They are housed at Edinburgh Zoo, known as the Scottish National Zoological Park. It is a zoological park of about 33 hectares in the heart of Edinburgh, the Scottish capital. It welcomes 600,000 visitors a year, making it the second most visited paid tourist attraction in Scotland after Edinburgh Castle. The zoo is involved in many scientific activities, such as the captive breeding of endangered animal species. Edinburgh Zoo is the only zoo in the UK to house giant pandas. The two pandas are :

  • Tian Tian (female): arrived at the zoo on 4 December 2011. Born on 24 August 2003 at Beijing Zoo.
  • Yang Guang (male): arrived at the zoo on December 4, 2011. Born on August 14, 2003, at Wolong Center.

Tian Tian and Yang Guang are leased by the China Giant Panda Research for 10 years.

4) Zoo with Pandas France

Ranked among the 5 best zoos in the world, Beauval Zoo has the greatest animal diversity in France. It is home to two adult pandas and a baby panda born in 2017.

  • Huan Huan (female): arrived at the zoo on 15 January 2012. Born on August 10, 2008, at the Chengdu research base on the breeding of the giant panda.
  • Yuan Zi (male): arrived at the zoo on 15 January 2012. Born on 6 September 2008 at the Chengdu research base on giant panda breeding.
  • Yuan Meng (male) : twin litter of which only the second pup survived.

Huan Huan and Yuan Zi are leased by the Chengdu research base on the breeding of the giant panda for a period of 10 years.

5) Zoo with Panda Belgium

In Belgium 5 pandas are present in the same zoo, 2 adults and 3 baby pandas. If you want to see this wonderful family you have to go to the Pairi Daiza Zoo in Brugelette. The members of the panda family are :

  • Hao Hao (female): Arrival at the zoo on February 23rd, 2014. Born on July 7, 2009, at the base of Ya'an Bifengxia.
  • Xing Hui (male) : arrived at the zoo on February 23, 2014. Born on July 22, 2009, at Ya'an Bifengxia base.
  • Tian Bao (male): Born at the zoo on 2 June 2016.
  • Bao Di (male): Born at the zoo on 8 August 2019.
  • Bao Mei (female): Born at the zoo on 8 August 2019.

6) Zoo with Panda Germany

2 adult pandas and 2 baby pandas are present in Germany at the Berlin Zoo.

  • Meng Meng (female): arrived at the zoo on 24 June 2017. Born on 10 July 2013 at the research base in Chengdu.
  • Jiao Qing (male): arrived at the zoo on 24 June 2017. Born on 15 July 2010 at the Chengdu Research Base.
  • Meng Xiang (male): born at the zoo on 31 August 2019.
  • Meng Yuan (male): born at the zoo on 31 August 2019.

Bao Bao and Tian Tian, were presented to Chancellor Helmut Schmidt in September 1979. Tian Tian died on 8 February 1984 and Bao Bao died on 22 August 2012. Bao Bao was the dean of pandas at his death. And the last representative of a generation of pandas offered by China to Western nations as a diplomatic gift.

7) Zoo with Pandas Finland:

There are currently two adult pandas in Finland at the Ähtäri Zoo and are expected to stay until 2033.

  • Jin Bao Bao (female): Arrival at the zoo on 18 January 2018. Born on 20 September 2014 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.
  • Hua Bao (male): arrived at the zoo on January 18, 2018. Born on 10 July 2013 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.

8) Zoo with pandas Denmark

Since last year there are two pandas at the Copenhagen Zoo they should stay until 2034.

  • Mao Sun (female): arrived at the zoo on 4 April 2019. Born on July 26, 2014, at the Chengdu research base on giant panda breeding.
  • Xing Er (male) : arrived at the zoo on April 4, 2019. Born on 23 August 2013 at the Chengdu research base on giant panda breeding.

9) Zoo with pandas Russia

The Moscow Zoo has two giant pandas at the zoo since last year and will continue to do so until 2034.

  • Ding Ding (female): arrived at the zoo on April 29, 2019. Born on July 30, 2017, at the base of Gengda Shenshuping.
  • Ru Yi (male): arrived at the zoo on 29 April 2019. Born on 31 July 2016 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.

III- ZOO WITH PANDA ASIA

1) Zoo with pandas Thailand

There is currently only one giant panda in Thailand at the Chiangmai Zoo. Chiangmai Zoo is located in Chiangmai City, the largest city in northern Thailand. Chiangmai Zoo now houses more than 2,000 animals of 400 different species on 80 hectares. Visitors must pay an extra 50 baht (100 baht for foreigners) to see pandas, also the 70 baht (100 baht for foreigners) for the zoo entrance ticket.

  • Lin Hui (female): Arrived at the zoo on 12 October 2003. Born on 28 September 2001 in the center of Wolong.

2) Zoo with Pandas Japan

a) Kobe Zoo

  • Shuang Shuang (female): arrived at the zoo on July 16, 2000. Born on September 16, 1995, in the center of Wolong.

b) Shirahama Zoo

Adventure World of Shirahama, often abbreviated to AWS, is a tourist park located in Shirahama City. It plays the role of both a zoo and an amusement park. This park is home to 6 pandas.

  • Ei Mei (male): arrived at the zoo on 6 September 1994. Born on September 14, 1992, at Beijing Zoo.
  • Rau Hin (female): born at the zoo on 6 September 2000.
  • Or Hin (female) : born at the zoo on December 2, 2014.
  • Tou Hin (female) : born at the zoo on December 2, 2014.
  • Yui Hin (female): born at the zoo on 18 September 2016.
  • Sai Hin (female): born at the zoo on August 14, 2018.

c) Tokyo Zoo / Ueno (Japan)

Ueno Zoo occupies 14.3 hectares in the heart of Tokyo. It is the oldest zoo in Japan known for its major role in conservation education. About 460 species are exhibited in this zoo, 3 giant pandas live in this zoo today.

  • Bi Li (male): arrived at the zoo on February 21, 2011. Born on 16 August 2005 in the center of Wolong.
  • Xian Nu (female): arrived at the zoo on 21 February 2011. Born on 3 July 2005 in the center of Wolong.
  • Xiang Xiang (female) : born at the zoo on June 12, 2017.

3) Zoo with Pandas Singapore

Singapore's River Safari Zoo is currently home to 2 pandas. These two pandas arrived in Singapore on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the establishment of relations between the two countries.
  • Wu Jie (male): arrived at the zoo on 6 September 2012. Born on 14 September 2007 in the center of Wolong.
  • Hu Bao (female) : arrived at the zoo on 6 September 2012. Born on September 3, 2008, at the base of Ya'an Bifengxia.

4) Zoo with Pandas Malaysia

The pandas arrived in Malaysia to celebrate 40 years of Sino-Malaysian diplomatic relations.
  • Fu Wa (male): arrived at the zoo on 21 May 2014. Born on 23 August 2006 in the center of Wolong.
  • Feng Yi (female) : arrived at the zoo on 21 May 2014. Born on 23 August 2006 in the center of Wolong.
  • Yi Yi (female) : born at the zoo on January 14, 2018.

5) Zoo with Pandas South Korea

Today there are two pandas in the Everland Complex:
  • Yuan Xin (male): arrived at the zoo on March 3, 2016. Born on July 28, 2012, at the base of Ya'an Bifengxia.
  • Hua Ni (female) : arrived at the zoo on March 3, 2016 (read the article). Born on 13 July 2013 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.

6) Zoo with Pandas Indonesia

Today there are Pandas in Indonesia in the Taman Safari:
  • Cai Tao (male): arrived at the zoo on 28 September 2017. Born on 4 August 2010 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.
  • Hu Chun (female): arrived at the zoo on 28 September 2017. Born on 8 September 2010 at Ya'an Bifengxia base.

IV- Zoo with Pandas Oceania

Adelaide Zoo in Australia is the only zoo in Oceania that houses pandas. It is the second oldest zoo in Australia and houses about 1800 animals of 300 different species. It also houses 2 pandas that will remain until 2024:
  • Wang Wang (male): arrived at the zoo on 28 November 2009. Born on 31 August 2005 in the center of Wolong.
  • Fu Ni (female): arrived at the zoo on 28 November 2009. Born on 23 August 2006 in the center of Wolong.
